The A2 exam for Portuguese citizenship
The language requirement has not changed
Portugal’s new nationality law came into force in May 2026 and extended the residency period required for citizenship. The A2 Portuguese requirement itself is unchanged — you still need to demonstrate A2, normally through the CIPLE exam.
CIPLE (Certificado Inicial de Português Língua Estrangeira) is the A2-level certificate issued through CAPLE at the University of Lisbon. It tests reading, writing, listening and speaking, and the result does not expire.
Most learners need somewhere around 150–180 hours of study to reach A2 comfortably. That is a real commitment, and it is much easier with a plan than without one.
If you already speak Brazilian Portuguese, you are still required to sit the exam — being a Portuguese speaker does not exempt you. In practice this usually means focused work on European pronunciation, vocabulary and exam format rather than starting over.
